This course is one of three main courses in the second semester of the Economics and Public Policy policy stream, centred on theoretical and empirical public economics. The course takes a topical approach to provide students with the opportunity to observe how theoretical modelisation, empirical analyses and evaluation go hand in hand in addressing pressing public economic questions of our time. Students should expect to learn how to use and apply theoretical models, as well as analyse and produce empirical analyses, so as to provide an evaluation of a public policy recommendation recently seen in the sectors covered in this course. The course is taught in seven four-hour blocks, with two blocks dedicated to a microeconomics primer in welfare analysis and government intervention, followed by a block of four hours each for the labour market, education sector, housing market, trade and industrial policy and taxation.
